The Importance of Taking Care of Tucker Sno-Cat® Rubber Tracks Tucker Sno-Cat® machines are engineered for extreme winter conditions, and our rubber tracks are one of the most critical components of performance. Proper care and maintenance of these tracks not only protects your investment but also ensures reliable operation in demanding environments.

Protecting Tracks When Not in Use 

Rubber tracks are built tough, but they are still susceptible to environmental wear. When your SnoCat® is not in use, covering the tracks is a simple yet highly effective step. Exposure to sunlight can gradually degrade rubber compounds. UV rays in particular accelerate cracking and drying. 

• Prevent premature rubber deterioration
•  Extend the overall lifespan of the track system

 Ensuring Proper Ice Scrapers Are Installed Ice buildup is one of the biggest threats to track performance and longevity. Without proper ice removal, packed snow and ice can freeze within the undercarriage, increasing strain on wheels, bearings, and belts. Proper scraper installation is essential: 

• 175″ tracks require 2 ice scrapers per track 
• 200″ tracks require 3 ice scrapers per track 

These scrapers continuously remove snow and ice as the track rotates, preventing accumulation that can cause imbalance, excessive wear, or component failure. Running without adequate scrapers risks unnecessary stress on the entire undercarriage system.  

 

Maintaining Proper Alignment 

Alignment is often overlooked but is absolutely critical for preserving wheel and track integrity. Improper alignment can lead to uneven wheel wear, increased friction, and premature failure of both wheels and tracks. When alignment is correct: 

• Tracks run true without excessive side loading 
• Rolling resistance is minimized 
• Fuel efficiency and performance improve 

Regularly checking and adjusting alignment ensures that your Tucker-Terra® tracks operate smoothly. 

 

Inspecting Tracks Before Parking 

At the end of the day, always perform a thorough inspection before parking your machine. Trails can hide sharp rocks, stumps, or debris that may cause cuts, punctures, or damage. Before shutting down: 

• Visually inspect the entire track surface 
• Check for cuts, tears, or missing lugs 
• Look for abnormal wear patterns 
• Remove packed debris 

Catching damage early prevents minor issues from becoming major failures. A small tear addressed promptly can mean the difference between a simple repair and a full track replacement.
